A simple self-assessment is the first step in identifying your opportunities for achieving energy and cost savings. You can use general facility energy costs and operating data to identify areas of inefficiency.

These tools can help you evaluate your options leaving you ready to select a vendor to conduct a preliminary energy audit of your facility.  After which you will be in a position to hire a vendor to complete an investment grade audit and implement improvements.

Whether you conduct your own preliminary energy use audit or contact or an expert to conduct one for you, the purpose is the same: a thorough examination of the energy consumption patterns at your facility to identify potential operational and technological energy savings opportunities.

Here are a few tips:

  • Be wholistic in your approach to energy savings.  Look at every energy efficiency opportunity including water infrastructure and use, and operations.
  • Include everything and scale back as necessary to fit your budget.
  • Don’t leave something out because you have “found a way” to fix it or keep it running.
  • Preliminary energy audits can be obtained at no cost.
  • Seek advice from enegy managers who have had energy use audits done on their facilities.
